Jack and Sandy Mercer

  • Movie:  My favorite recent movie was Children of Men based on the English mystery writer P.D. James' book of the same title.  As one reviewer commenting on Children of Men wrote, "Echoes of the gospel—both subtle and obvious—occur at every turn."
  • Song:  Give Me Jesus  by Jeremy Camp.  An updated version of one of the greatest Christian spirituals ever written.
  • Favorite Vacation: Tie. 7600 mile road trip summer of 2007 from The Burg to Seattle and back and trip to Scotland in 2001 with Sandy. (See photo taken on the Island of Lewis and Harris off the coast of Scotland)
  • Favorite Saturday Activity: Watch Vanderbilt football, play golf, go to a movie with Sandy
  • Most Influential Book: Other than the Bible Joy Unspeakable: Power and Renewal in the Holy Spirit by Martyn Lloyd-Jones.  Martyn Lolyd-Jones reoriented everything I had believed as an evangelical with respect to the Holy Spirit with this book.
  • Life Verse: “Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come.” (Psalm 71: 17-18 NIV)

A Kentucky native, Jack attended Vanderbilt University on a football scholarship where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree as a religious studies major. While in Nashville he and Sandy, his wife, met in the college department of Belmont Heights Baptist Church. Following his undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt, Jack earned a Master of Divinity degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly after completing his seminary work, both Sandy and Jack felt God's call to serve in the northeast. Responding to that call led to a ten year pastorate in New Jersey. While in New Jersey Jack completed a Doctor of Ministry degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. After his time in New Jersey, Jack moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1992 where he pastored HillSong Church for twelve years leading the church through a period of spiritual renewal and church growth. Jack currently serves as Senior Pastor of Harrisonburg Baptist Church.

Jack has served both as a consultant and teacher in the areas of long range planning and visionary leadership for the local church. Additionally, recognized for his understanding of preaching, Jack was asked to serve as the editor for the preaching section of The Complete Library of Christian Worship under the general editorship of the late Dr. Robert Webber.   Currently Jack is the current Moderator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia,  memmber of the Harrisonburg Pregnancy Center board, and additionally serves on the national coordinating committee of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Sandy, also a Kentucky native, received her undergraduate degree in special and elementary education from Peabody College for Teachers of Vanderbilt University and her masters in education from the University of Louisville.  She has taught elementary, middle, high school and special education in Kentucky, New Jersey, North Carolina and Virginia.  She is currently a special education teacher at Harrisonburg High School in Harrisonburg, VA.

In 2000 she was the first recipient of the Dean Smith Spirit in Teaching Award and Teacher of the Year at Estes Hills Elementary School.  In 1988 she was selected as an outstanding teacher through the NJ Governor's Teacher Recognition Program.  She is author of Being the Best Me, Social Skills Books, K-5, A Teacher's Guide to the Novels of Robert Kimmel Smith, and A Teacher's Guide to the Novels of Betsy Byars.  She has written several educational articles and has been a workshop presenter in the area of teaching writing in NJ and NC. 

Her passion in ministry is prayer and mentoring college students and young adults as they become passionately devoted followers of Christ.

Jack and Sandy have two daughters, Tabitha and Rebecca.  Tabitha is married and resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina where she is a pre-school teacher, and Rebecca lives in New York where she works in a public relations firm.

T. W. is a native of Lynchburg, Virginia. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1966 and earned a Master of Divinity degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky in 1970. Following seminary T. W. served as pastor of Howerton Baptist Church in Essex County, Virginia. In December, 1974, he joined the staff of Harrisonburg Baptist Church as Associate Pastor. During his years of service at H.B.C., T. W. has had ministry responsibilities in the areas of Youth Ministry, Outreach, Senior Adult Ministry, Sunday School, Discipleship Training, Single Adult Ministry, and Pastoral Care.

T. W. and his wife, Louise, have been married since January of 1998. Their blended family consists of four adult children (a son and three daughters) and five very special grandchildren (two granddaughters and three grandsons.) Louise works as the Administrative Office Specialist (Secretary Senior) to the Director and Staff of the 26th District Court Service Unit, Department of Juvenile Justice, State of Virginia. 

T. W.’s hobbies include racquetball, motorcycling, square dancing, and yard work.

 

James (Jimmy) Via, Minister of Worship and Media

Jimmy is a native of Martinsville, VA.  He attended Virginia Tech, where he received his bachelor's degree in Music with a concentration in Audio Technology.  Jimmy met his wife Lauren while attending Baptist Collegiate Ministries at VT.  They were married in 2005, and their son Declan was born in January 2007.

Jimmy has a passion for helping others worship God through music.  He and Lauren have led worship for churches, conferences and retreats throughout Virginia and North Carolina.

Jimmy enjoys spending time with his family, woodworking, music writing and recording, and traveling.

Mike and his wife Laura have two daughters, Kelsey and Chloe, and a chow named Cooper.  Mike enjoys trips to the beach in the summer, trips to the mountains in the fall, and getting together with friends and family.

Mike was born and raised here in Harrisonburg.  He graduated from Turner Ashby High School and attended Blue Ridge Community College and JMU.  He has worked with the youth here at HBC for 12 years.  In September 2005, he joined the HBC ministry team as the part time youth minister.  He enjoys working with the youth, hanging out with them, and watching them grow in their walk with God.  When Mike’s not here at the church, he works at The Cottage.

Annette was born and raised in Harrisonburg, VA. She graduated from Turner Ashby High School and got her undergraduate degree from Longwood University. She taught middle school music for one year in Chesterfield County. Then she married her husband Frank and came back to the area to live. She has her masters’ degree in music from JMU. She has taught middle and high school choral and general music and elementary music. Her passion is directing children and adult choirs in church music. She also does accompanying for various groups and people.

 Annette and Frank have been married for 31 years and have 2 grown daughters. Annette enjoys playing the piano, reading, walking, and playing with her dog Sadie.

Alissa grew up in Harrisonburg, VA.  She graduated from Spotswood High School and went on to receive a BS from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.  Go Hokies!  Alissa returned to Harrisonburg after graduation to marry Mike whom she met in college through Campus Crusade for Christ.  They got married at HBC in August 2004 and have been involved in the church ever since.

Her husband Mike works at MEI Engineering, Inc. in downtown Harrisonburg.  They have a newborn son Jake and also have a minature Dachshund named Daisy.

Alissa's hobbies include reading, scrapbooking, and hanging out with her boys.
